Wikileaks

Image
Personally, I think that Wikileaks has done some good for our society; only because it has allowed every day citizens to keep their eyes open and gain knowledge that has always been kept secret from us. I'm sure there are many positives to keeping this information private, but I feel like it's important for our world to be as educated as possible with what is really happening.   Julian Assange   For example, in the Ted Talk he talked about information that he released that involved Kenya and their elected officials. Julian Assange basically said that by releasing this information, he shifted the elections and changed Kenya's government.   I find this to be really interesting and important because obviously this information showed the citizens what type of person they were about to elect and changed their minds once they knew the truth; that shows you that information being withheld ( in most cases) doesn't benefit the whole group, only a select amount

The Challenge- Blog project #1

Image
The new season of "The Challenge."  For my first media blog project, I decided to write about one of my favorite shows of all time, MTV's The Challenge! This show is a guilty pleasure of mine; I get my dose of reality TV with all of the drama, steamy hookups, and competition all in one. For those who are also Challenge fans, you may know that the new season just premiered on the 18th. Everyone is super excited because its titled "Dirty 30." Which basically means they're bringing in all of the cast members that play the DIRTIEST. It should be a great season filled with fake alliances, back stabbing, and amazing entertainment. Unfortunately, I have not gotten the opportunity to watch the season premiere, so I will be basing my project on the season before, The Challenge "Invasion."   Last season of "The Challenge."   Description The Challenge is shown on MTV on Tuesday night's at 9 PM. We typically watch it the

Persuasive Techniques

The first thought that popped into my head are those anti-smoking ads made by "The Real Cost." They have an array of commercials aiming towards teenagers and promoting the negatives of smoking tobacco. I find this to be a fantastic ad campaign, although it can be a tad obnoxious at times, it overall gets the point across and makes you think twice before picking up a cigarette.   https://youtu.be/Vp8fcHI0-BI   The Real Cost: Science Class     The commercial that stands out the most to me out of this series is the science class ad. It involves a teacher adding in a bunch of chemicals to this science project and it turns into this scary monster type thing. Then a pitch line of "If cigarettes looked as dangerous as they are, you'd run like hell" is said at the end. They use an emotional branding throughout these campaigns as they promote the scary effects of tobacco use, and really makes a person think twice.   __________________________________

Facebook Advertising- Torrid

Image
Torrid is a brand that I shop often, so I felt it would be interesting to look on Facebook to see how they are advertising their brand. I found that they often post pictures of their latest styles, especially the ones that would appeal the most to the season (sundresses, tank tops, shorts, etc). The above picture is advertised as "Because we're ladies on the go " with an airplane emoji at the end of the sentence. Using keywords such as "on the go" would suggest that their clothes are good for working, or busy women, which would definitely appeal to a large audience. The target audience of Torrid is plus-size women, as they carry sizes 10-30. Specifically, they aim to provide fashionable clothing as it's difficult to find cute but comfy clothes in larger sizes. For the most part, I feel like they are running an effective campaign for their product, but there are some reasons to believe that their customers aren't always happy with it. Fo

The Internet

Sherry Turkle makes some fantastic points about technology. It was funny to me that she mentioned how she enjoys getting texts, but too many of them can be damaging. The first main point she mentions is that our devices can be very psychologically powerful; they have the ability to change what we do and who we are. Cell phones and other devices have made it where important meetings or classes are now being held less important because those attending them are online shopping, writing emails, pretty much doing anything except giving the speaker their attention. We are getting so out of touch with being around people and actually connecting, that we are getting together yet exploring phone's side by side rather than holding a real conversation.  These conversations are becoming so far and in between that some people can't even hold a real one due to have no conversationalist skills! People would rather text something out because they can sit and think about what to say, rather

The Depths of Twitter

Image
As much as I'd like to say that I'm not that typical person constantly scrolling through social media, I'd be lying. Every day I wake up and tell myself that I'm going to stay off my phone's app section, but I fail, and end up going through the cycle of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, repeat. Out of these three social medias, I feel like Twitter is definitely the most controversial when it comes to political topics in particular; or maybe that's just because of who I follow. For example, I follow @POTUS only because I wanted to see what Barack Obama was relaying to the world through this social forum. Now the person who runs this account is obviously a different person, Donald Trump. Not only do I follow the presidential account, but I also follow President Trumps official Twitter account, @realDonaldTrump.   To put it out there, I'm not a fan of our new President for multiple reasons, but one of the largest being the way he holds himself in the public ey
